Jonathan Pinson, an American drummer renowned for his versatility and daring approach, began his musical journey at the tender age of two, surrounded by the melodies of his mother's choir. His formal training in music commenced at six with piano lessons, quickly followed by a transition to the drum set at the Colburn School of Performing Arts. Under the tutelage of Billy Higgins at The World Stage, Jonathan honed his skills, and by high school, he was already performing professionally in various jazz clubs throughout Los Angeles.
Jonathan's passion for music was matched by his commitment to mentorship. During his high school years, he dedicated time to mentoring young percussion enthusiasts and conducting jazz workshops for inner-city youths in local public elementary schools. His efforts extended into his college years, reflecting his belief in the transformative power of music education.
The young musician's talent did not go unnoticed. In his senior year of high school, Jonathan received three prestigious awards: 1st place in the Music Center’s Spotlight Award (2007), Performer of the Year at Alexander Hamilton High School, and the Jimmy Lyon’s Scholarship for a full tuition scholarship at Berklee College of Music. His academic excellence continued to shine with the receipt of the Dolo Coker Scholarship in 2009 and 2010.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Berklee, Jonathan was selected as one of seven musicians for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA, where he earned his Master of Music. This achievement marked a significant turning point in his career, as he was invited to tour with jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter at just 23 years old.
Jonathan's bold and empathic musicality has since made him a highly sought-after drummer in the music industry. He has collaborated with a plethora of renowned artists, including Kamasi Washington, Seal, Braxton Cook, Moses Sumney, Marquis Hill, Terrace Martin, Alex Isley, Gerald Clayton, Kiefer, Mark Turner, Gilad Hekselman, Christian Kuria, and Ben Williams. His performances have graced stages at notable venues and festivals worldwide, such as the Newport, Montreal, Jakarta, and So What’s Next Jazz Festivals, the Hollywood Bowl, the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Yoshi’s, and Ronnie Scott’s.
Aside from his performance career, Jonathan leads "Boom Clap," a project that reflects his aspiration to bring joy and healing through storytelling in music. As an international artist and educator, he continues to inspire and teach in New York and the Los Angeles area.
Jonathan plays Istanbul Agop Cymbals and endorses Canopus drums, Pro Mark Sticks, and Evans Drumheads, further cementing his status as a distinguished figure in the world of music.

Live at The Sun Rose is the debut live album from Jonathan Pinson’s Boom Clap, recorded during an electric February 2024 performance at West Hollywood’s intimate Sun Rose venue.
